Decision on the assessment of must, wine and other products

The suitability for trading is established with the assessment of must, wine and other products. Suitable labels for must, wine and other traded products are determined.

The assessment is conducted in three consecutive phases:

• the client's order or claim by the competent inspectorate,
• sampling for assessment,
• the verification of data on geographical origin from the register of producers of grape and wine or the certificate of the export country;
• laboratory sample analysis (except for mixtures of wine with other products),
• organoleptic assessment of the sample (except for concentrated grape must and rectified concentrated grape must),
• the decision on the assessment of the sample.

The procedure of must, wine and other products assessment is initiated with the purchase order.

The assessment of must, wine and other products is implemented by the authorised organisation upon the demand of the producer or the competent inspection.Authorised organisations in Slovenia are:

• Kmetijski inštitut Slovenije,
• Kmetijsko gozdarski zavod Maribor,
• Kmetijsko gozdarski zavod Nova Gorica,
• Kmetijsko gozdarski zavod Novo mesto,
• Fabijan lab, analysis, Zvonko Fabijan, s.p.

The assessment costs depend on the type of the assessed product. The assessment costs are carried by the entity procuring the assessment implementation.

The types of products for which an assessment decision is required, are:

• must,
• quality wine,
• premium wine,
• PTP wines (cviček, teran, belokranjec, metliška črnina, bizeljčan),
• PGO regional wine.

Samples are assessed with a chemical analysis, where the prescribed parameters and the organoleptic assessment are verified, i.e. the features of the sample like colour, aroma, taste, clarity.

The assessment also verifies other types of wine:

• non-alcohol wine (max. 0.5 vol. %)
• low-alcohol wine (from 0.5 vol. % to 5.0 vol. %)
