Decision on the recognition of professional qualification – veterinarian

The decision on the recognition of a professional qualification enables the individual to obtain a licence to perform a regulated profession in the Republic of Slovenia.

An individual who receives a decision on the recognition of a professional qualification for a veterinarian must lodge a claim for a decision on a veterinary licence at the Veterinary Chamber, and must obtain membership of this Chamber.

If the profession is not regulated in the country where the agent is located, the service provider must perform the services which they wish to provide in the Republic of Slovenia in their home country continuously or for at least 2 years in the  previous 10 years before the veterinarian starts performing these services in the Republic of Slovenia.

Conditions

  • The individual concerned must be a citizen of the Republic of Slovenia or any other Member State of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or the Swiss Confederation.

  • An individual must have the appropriate university education in veterinary medicine.

    Veterinarians’ qualifications are recognised only on the basis that at least five years of regular theoretical and practical study have been implemented in accordance with the appropriate programme and have been performed at a university or higher education institution that educates on officially equal level or under the university's supervision.

    Education must ensure the acquisition of the following knowledge and skills:

    • Appropriate knowledge of sciences based on veterinary activities;
    • Appropriate knowledge about the morphology and functioning of healthy animals, their breeding, reproduction and general hygiene as well as feeding, including the technology for producing and conserving various types of feeding stuff that is appropriate for specific animals;
    • Appropriate knowledge of animal behaviour and their protection;
    • Appropriate knowledge of the causes, types, progress, effects, diagnostics and treatment of animal diseases, individually or in groups, including special knowledge about diseases that can be spread to people;
    • Appropriate knowledge about preventive veterinary medicine;
    • Appropriate knowledge about hygiene and the technology for producing, manufacturing and launching animal products or products of animal origin which are intended as food for people;
    • Appropriate knowledge about the laws and other regulations in connection with the above mentioned areas;
    • Appropriate clinical and other practical experience under appropriate supervision.

    Evidence

    For education acquired in the Republic of Slovenia:

    • A diploma or certificate – original version, a certified or non-certified version with the possibility of viewing the original.

    For education acquired in the EU:

    • Documents on formal qualifications issued by the Member State, if such documents confirm a successfully completed education which started prior to the reference dates, including the confirmation of the Member State that the veterinarian actually and legally performed the stated activities for at least three consecutive years within a five-year period prior to the issue of the confirmation.

    Legal basis

  • An individual must meet all the prescribed conditions for exercising a regulated profession in his or her country of origin.

    An individual must have appropriate professional qualifications for performing services in the Republic of Slovenia.

    If the profession is not regulated in the country of origin, the individual must have provided the services to be provided in the Republic of Slovenia continuously or cumulatively for at least two years in the last 10-year period before he or she may start providing these services in the Republic of Slovenia.

    Evidence

    A diploma, a certificate and other documents confirming the applicant's level of education, professional competence, experience and other competencies, and certificates attesting to the type and content of training completed.

    Legal basis

  • Before registering a particular profession, a citizen of another EU Member State, an EEA Member State or the Swiss Confederation must present a certificate stating that he or she is not temporarily or permanently prohibited from practising that profession at the time of the issuance of the certificate.

    Evidence

    Proof that he or she is not permanently or temporarily prohibited from providing services at the time of the issuance of the certificate.

  • The Slovenian Bar Association insures a lawyer against liability for damages which could be incurred by a client during the practice of the profession of lawyer.

    The insurance covers damages due to gross negligence, error or failure to perform professional obligation on the part of a lawyer and his or her employees in the amount of:

    • EUR 250,000 for an individual case, or
    • EUR 500,000 annually.
    The insurance premium is paid from the lawyer's insurance contribution.
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the Republic of Slovenia or any other EU Member State.

    A lawyer who is from a country which is not an EU Member State and has the right to pursue the profession of lawyer in a country which is not an EU Member State may pursue the profession of lawyer only if the applicant meets the condition of reciprocity and the following conditions:

    • a lawyer from another country is entered in the register of foreign lawyers who may pursue the profession of lawyer in the Republic of Slovenia under the professional title of lawyer; with all the rights and obligations pertaining to the pursuit of the profession of lawyer if he or she meets the following conditions:
      • he or she is legally competent,
      • has an active knowledge of the Slovenian language,
      • has the equipment and premises required for the pursuit of the profession of lawyer, and
      • has passed the examination on the knowledge of the legal system of the Republic of Slovenia.

    Evidence

    The applicant shall submit a photocopy of a valid personal identity document which proves his/her nationality, or a certificate of nationality issued pursuant to the regulations of the Member State of origin.
