Entry in the register of veterinary licences
Upon entry in the register, an individual acquires the title veterinarian.
The written application is lodged at the Veterinary Chamber.
The Veterinary Chamber verifies the data of the state examination passed at the Veterinary Administration of the Republic of Slovenia; it also receives acknowledgment of the qualification from the Ministry of Labour; it then issues a decision on granting a licence.
Data on licences issued are entered in the register of veterinary licences.Conditions

An individual must have the appropriate university education in veterinary medicine.
Veterinarians’ qualifications are recognised only on the basis that at least five years of regular theoretical and practical study have been implemented in accordance with the appropriate programme and have been performed at a university or higher education institution that educates on officially equal level or under the university's supervision.
Education must ensure the acquisition of the following knowledge and skills:
- Appropriate knowledge of sciences based on veterinary activities;
- Appropriate knowledge about the morphology and functioning of healthy animals, their breeding, reproduction and general hygiene as well as feeding, including the technology for producing and conserving various types of feeding stuff that is appropriate for specific animals;
- Appropriate knowledge of animal behaviour and their protection;
- Appropriate knowledge of the causes, types, progress, effects, diagnostics and treatment of animal diseases, individually or in groups, including special knowledge about diseases that can be spread to people;
- Appropriate knowledge about preventive veterinary medicine;
- Appropriate knowledge about hygiene and the technology for producing, manufacturing and launching animal products or products of animal origin which are intended as food for people;
- Appropriate knowledge about the laws and other regulations in connection with the above mentioned areas;
- Appropriate clinical and other practical experience under appropriate supervision.
Evidence
For education acquired in the Republic of Slovenia:
- A diploma or certificate – original version, a certified or non-certified version with the possibility of viewing the original.
For education acquired in the EU:
- A diploma, certificate, other documents on formal education acquired in the EU – in verified versions and Slovenian translation.
- Documents on formal qualifications issued by the Member State, if such documents confirm a successfully completed education which started prior to the reference dates, including the confirmation of the Member State that the veterinarian actually and legally performed the stated activities for at least three consecutive years within a five-year period prior to the issue of the confirmation.

A candidate applies to take an examination by sending an appropriate form to the Veterinary Administration of the Republic of Slovenia.
- The application must include a document on previously competed studies in veterinary medicine.
- The examination consists of a general oral examination and a special part that combines a written task and an oral task.
- The examination is performed before an examination committee, comprising of a chairman, two members and a secretary.
- At least 15 days prior to the exam, the Veterinary Administration notifies the candidate and the committee on the date of the examination.
The candidate passes the state examination if they are successful in both the general and special parts of the examination. The result is announced by the committee chairman in the presence of members immediately after the entire examination has been performed. The education certificate is submitted to candidates that pass the examination or within 8 days of this.
The costs of the examination are covered by the candidate. They amount to EUR 127.14.
After the examination, the candidate receives an invoice; if a foreign veterinarian performs the examination, the translation costs are also charged to the candidate.

Veterinarians become members of the Veterinary Chamber by signing a membership accession card.
Membership is obligatory for all active veterinarians.
The membership for 2011/2012 amounted to:
- EUR 23 per month,
- For pensioners EUR 7.67 per month;
- An additional membership fee of EUR 11.48 per month is charged by the Private Veterinarians' Section (SZVP).
Different expert groups within the section or the Chamber also charge their own fees (Committee for Health Protection of Hoofed Animals at the SZVP).
The suspension of membership is possible during maternity leave or extended sick leave, but only for a maximum of three consecutive years.

Renewal term
Veterinarians are obliged to participate in periodical training and pass the prescribed knowledge examinations according to the programme prepared by the Veterinary Chamber.
Educational activities comprise active or passive attendance at expert courses, seminars, lectures and other activities (e.g. expert papers, publications etc.), which are scored according to the Educational Activities Assessment System, which states the rules on the implementation and assessment of permanent expert training and professional qualification.
If the applicant does not pass the test, the Veterinary Chamber sends a notice before the temporary withdrawal of the licence, which states that all conditions must be met within one year.
If the veterinary does not pass the prescribed training in the additional period, the director of the Veterinary Chamber issues a decision on licence withdrawal, which applies until all conditions are fulfilled.
