Professional exam for sea pilot
A sea pilot must pass the ship pilot exam for pilotage of a certain area, and acquires the pilot card based on which the Slovenian Maritime Administration enters the pilot in the register of pilots.
The person who wants to pass the exam must hold the title deck officer on a ship with gross tonnage 3000 or higher and practical experience, they must be healthy and pass the safety at work exam.
The professional exam for sea pilot is composed of the oral and practical part and is passed at the Slovenian Maritime Administration and on the ship.
The candidate must submit a written application to pass the professional exam at the Slovenian Maritime Administration.
The professional exam is taken in front of an exam commission. An applicant initially takes the oral exam. After passed oral exam the candidate takes the practical part on the same area where the ships will be piloted within one month at the latest. The candidate who passes the professional exam, receives a pilot card from the Slovenian Maritime Administration, and the pilot must have this card whenever piloting ships. The pilot card is valid for two years.
A pilot who acquired the pilot card and wants to navigate ships outside the Koper cargo port must take a practical ship piloting test for that area.
The candidate has the right to a complaint if they disagree with the evaluation.

Renewal term
The validity of the pilot card is extended by the Slovenian Maritime Administration based on the health examination certificate and recognised professional qualification. Professional qualification is recognised to a pilot who has performed at least 80 manoeuvres in the previous two years.
