Professional examination
A professional examination is used to establish and assess the qualification of the candidate for performing expert works in the field of cultural heritage protection, for which the candidate has been trained.
The examinations are categorised with regard to the field of cultural heritage protection: conservation, conservation and restoration and museum fields. Examinations are further categorised with regard to the required education that is necessary to obtain a title.
An individual who passes an exam in a certain field of cultural heritage protection and starts performing work in another field of cultural heritage protection must perform a supplementary part of the examination in the field of cultural heritage protection, which the passed exam did not comprise. The supplementary part of the examination must be performed in one year from the start of work in the other field of cultural heritage protection.
An individual who obtained a higher level of education during employment than the level within the scope of which the examination was passed, must pass the supplementary part of the examination. If the individual performs work that applies to the newly obtained higher education level, they must pass the supplementary part of the examination within one year from the date when they were allocated to the particular job.
The candidate can prepare for an examination when they perform at least one half of the prescribed apprenticeship or training period.
The application for the exam must be in written form. After a complete application with all evidence, the president of the exam commission determines a person who questions the candidate for the special part of the examination and the evaluator of the written assignment, and they approve the applied topic of the written assignment or determines another topic of the written assignment or relieves the candidate to prepare a written assignment upon the proposal of their mentor.
The examination comprises a general and special part: The examination for candidates with a minimum 1st higher level education in the conservation activity comprises the written assignment.
The general part of the examination is made in writing. It is uniform for all candidates, regardless of the level of their education. The candidate does not have to pass the general part of the examination, if they passed the examination in another field of cultural heritage. The examination questionnaire form is determined by the persons questioning the candidates and lasts for maximum 60 minutes. The candidate passes the general part of the exam if 60% of total points are scored.
The special part of the examination is passed in written or oral form. It comprises knowledge with regard to the type of professional work for which the candidate is preparing. The special part of the examination comprises the general part and selected sub-field. The candidate chooses the sub-field with regard to employment, job and expert field, where they work.
Individuals with high school education perform in conservation activities pass the special part of the examination with the general part.
The questionnaire in the special part must be adapted to the level of education and the expert work of the candidate. The special part of the exam lasts max. 90 minutes, the candidate passes it if they achieve 60% of total points for each individual subject.
The knowledge shown by the candidate in an individual examination subject is evaluated with "successful" and "not successful". The candidate who is evaluated with "not successful" at one subject, can resit the examination in the deadline determined by the commission and cannot be shorter than 20 days from the date of the first examination. A candidate who is evaluated with "not successful" in two or more subjects must once again apply for the examination and resit the entire examination.
A candidate who passed the examination receives confirmation on the passed exam from the ministry.
The costs of the examination are covered by the competent organisation or any other care entity or the candidate. The professional examination is free of charge for apprentices who work at the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, in national or authorised museums, the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia or the NUK. Other candidates must settle the costs of examination at application and submit a copy of the payment certificate.

The purpose of traineeship is to familiarise a trainee with the cultural heritage and its conservation, public service in the field of cultural heritage protection, provide him the knowledge of the methods of work in the field of cultural heritage protection in his respective field and prepare him for the examination and subsequent expert work.
Before the examination, an individual, who is not a trainee and carries out the works in the field of cultural heritage protection for the first time shall complete the training which is in its content the same as traineeship. The traineeship is carried out at the competent organisation or other entity in the field of cultural heritage protection, and shall include at least 20 working days with the competent organisation which pursues the activity in the field of cultural heritage protection for which the candidate has been trained.
The representative of the organisation or other entity in the field of cultural heritage protection, where the traineeship or training has been carried out, shall notify the Ministry of Culture on the start of traineeship. The representative of the organisation registers the traineeship/training on the form. Only the trainees, for which the ministry receives the notification on the traineeship, may sit the exam.
After completed traineeship, a candidate sits the professional examination in the field of conservation:
The traineeship shall last:
- 6 months for the trainee with the secondary education;
- 9 months for the trainee with the higher professional education;
- 12 months for the trainee with the high education.
At the start of traineeship, the representative of the organisation or other entity in the field of cultural heritage protection, where the traineeship takes place, shall determine the trainee's mentor. The mentor determines the traineeship programme, monitors and guides the trainee throughout the traineeship period and after the completed traineeship writes a report on the trainee's work.The traineeship programme shall comply with the requirements of the examination for the individual level of education and tasks in the field of conservation. The traineeship programme comprises the general and special part.
The general part of the traineeship programme is uniform for all trainees, notwithstanding the level of their education. It comprises gaining work experience in the field of cultural heritage protection, familiarisation with the protection and conservation of cultural heritage, operation and arrangement of the organisation or other entity related to the cultural heritage protection, basic principles of code of professional conduct and programme of the general part of the examination.
The special part of the traineeship programme comprises the familiarisation with and practical training in the field of conservation.
The traineeship programme includes the preparation of the written assignment which is an integral part of the examination. The topic of written assignment is chosen by the trainee with the mentor's consent.

The topic of written assignment is determined in the field of cultural heritage protection and in relation to the sub-field for which the candidate has been trained. The commission approves the applied topic or determines other topic of the written assignment.
On the basis of the complete application, the commission determines a person who questions the candidate and with whom the candidate and mentor may consult.
The written assignment is prepared in a form of the presentation of the project applicable in practice and notwithstanding this project has already been carried out or planned.
The assignment of the candidates with at least level 1 of high education shall comprise one sheet of text and optional photographic material, while the assignment of the candidates with secondary education shall comprise a half of sheet of text and optional photographic material. One sheet comprises 30,000 characters with spaces or 16 pages with an average of 1,800 characters with spaces.
The written assignment should be logically divided in chapters or separate sections. The written assignment shall be attached with the Copyright Statement related to the written assignment for the professional exam.
The written assignment shall deal with the conservation work in the sub-field, which may be a report on the implementation of a specific project. The content shall be processed as to comprise the presentation of the professional issue, presentation of the method to solve this issue together with the description of the implementation or procedure and the conclusion which includes the candidate's opinion on the addressed topic or his comments. The working assignment also includes the statement of the candidate that he observed copyright and related rights in its preparation.
The mentor may propose that the already published work or the work prepared to be published may be regarded as a written assignment, which the candidate submits to the commission and which is not older than two years, if its scope and quality does not exceed the required level of the written assignment.
The written assignment with positive evaluation is the condition to take the special part of the exam.
Exemption from the written assignment is possible, if the public contribution meets the scope of the task and sub-field. Exemption from the preparation of the task is proposed by the mentor.
The Ministry of Culture notifies the candidate of the approval of the topic of the written task and the deadline for its submission, possible exemption, examination board and on the day of the examination 15 days after the expiry of the application deadline.
The printed assignment shall be submitted at the examination in an electronic form or it shall be sent to the person who questions the candidate immediately after the notification on the deadline for the submission of the written assignment and a courtesy copy to the e-address: nada.zoran(at)gov.si.
