Prior to performing this activity, the owner of the animal must register their holding and be entered in the Register of Holders of Farm Animals (EIRŽ) managed by the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection (UVHVVR).

All beekeepers are obliged to submit data to the register of bee houses on the number of bee colonies they keep in an individual bee house, i.e. on 15 April and 31 October. Data must be submitted no later than by 25 May for both aforementioned dates.

A permit must be acquired for breeding indigenous and non-indigenous animal species, which is issued by the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO). In the case of breeding non-indigenous animal species, a risk assessment for the environment must be implemented.

This include:

• breeding and rearing of other domestic or wild animals:
• ostrich,
• pigeon,
• other birds (except poultry),
• rabbit,
• hare,
• other fur animals, deer in pens;
• pelt production;
• bee-keeping (production of honey and beeswax);
• rearing of worms, snails, insects;
• breeding of reptiles;
• breeding of silkworm;
• production of silkworm cocoons;
• breeding of pet animals (except fish):
• dogs and cats,
• ornamental birds, such as parrots, canaries, peacocks;
• hamsters, chinchilla and similar.
• Breeding and rearing of other animals.

These also include:

• production of animal embryos for reproduction.

• Bee-keeping;
• Production of royal jelly and propolis.
