Conditions

These terms apply to the profession Tourist guide

  • The exam of the professional competence to pursue a tourist guiding activity is taken according to the programme of 3 February 1999, adopted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia.

    The exam consists of a theoretical and practical part.

    In the theoretical part, candidates answer orally six theoretical questions from different thematic areas (these are: tourism geography and cartography, history, ethnology, psychological aspects of guiding groups, art history and archaeology and the basics of tourism operations and tourist travel organisation).

    In the practical part of the exam, candidates set off on a day trip around Slovenia to guide a bus tour with the use of microphone and a walking tour of old city centres. Candidates receive the tour programme at least one week before departure so that they can apply to participate and prepare for guiding (if the date in question is not suitable for them, they may take the exam on the next date or with the next group).

    The exam entry application is to be submitted to the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia, Dimičeva 13, 1000 Ljubljana, on a prescribed form with an indication "Tourist guide exam".

    The completed and signed exam entry application is to be accompanied by proof of the exam payment. The exam costs amount to EUR 208.00.

    After passing the exam, the tourist guide is entered in the register of tourist guides. The Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia provides tour guides the following:

    • a certificate of entry in the register of tourist guides;
    • a certificate of completed exam;
    • a plastic licence card with a colour photograph.

    The register of tourist guides, kept by the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia, includes individuals that have passed the tourist guide exam and individuals from Contracting States that were issued a decision on the recognition of professional qualifications.

    For the purpose of informing the public about qualified tourist guides, the Ministry responsible for tourism manages the register of tourist guides that contains the following information:

    • the name and permanent address of the guide – these are the only publicly accessible pieces of information;
    • the number of days of guiding for the previous year;
    • the names of the countries guided to in the previous year (up to ten countries);
    • data concerning competence and qualifications;
    • the tourist guide's contact data (e-mail address, telephone number) subject to their written consent.

    The register is publicly available and can be accessed on the website of the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia.

    If professional errors or negligence in the exercise of the profession are established, the minister responsible for tourism may issue a decision on reprimand or decide to delete the tourist guide concerned from the register. Tourist guides that have not been engaged in the activity for more than five years are deleted from the register.

    For the purpose of informing the public about qualified tourist guides of a tourist area, a register of tour guides of the tourist area is kept by one municipality in the tourist area, as agreed upon by the municipalities of the tourist area concerned; the register includes the following data:

    • name and permanent residence of a tour guide;
    • number of days of guiding in the tourist area for the previous year;
    • data concerning competence and qualifications;
    • the tourist guide's contact data (e-mail address, telephone number) subject to their written consent.

    The register is publicly available and can be accessed on the website of the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia.
