Manager and operator of a boat
A person operating a boat must pass an exam for a boat manager and a test for the operation of a boat. On a boat equipped with a radio station with digital selective calling on very high frequencies, the person who operates the boat must have a certificate on the qualification to operate with a VHF GMDSS station.
Conditions

A person who operates a boat must take the boat master exam.
The exam is composed of the theoretical and practical part. The exam takes maximum 30 minutes.
The theoretical part is taken orally and encompasses knowledge test in the following contents:
- rules on avoiding collision at sea,
- maritime regulations,
- basics of navigation,
- basics of engine operations,
- seafarer work and skills.
The practical part:
- at the subject on rules on avoiding collision at sea encompasses the knowledge test in avoiding the collision at overpassing, crossing and opposite courses;
- the exam for the basics of navigation involves the determination of the boat position, nautical maps, their reading and use, determining the course of navigation, measuring the distance and types or ropes as well their use with knots.
A candidate who wishes to take the exam must submit a written application at the Slovenian Maritime Administration that determines the exam deadline. The candidate receives a certificate on the qualification for boat master when the exam is passed. The certificate on the qualification for boat master is issued by the Slovenian Maritime Administration with unlimited validity.
The candidate has the right to a complaint submitted in written form in 24 hours or on the next working day after the exam.

A person who operates a boat with engine power to 7.35 kW and to 7 metres long or a watercraft, must have at least the certificate on passed knowledge exam.
The person can operate the boat with paddles and sails, which is up to 7 metres long, i.e. without the certificate on passed knowledge test.
The programme for the knowledge test encompasses the following subjects:
- rules on avoiding collision at sea,
- maritime regulations.
The exam is composed of the theoretical and practical part and takes maximum 30 minutes. The theoretical part is taken orally.
A candidate who wishes to take the exam must submit a written application at the Slovenian Maritime Administration that determines the exam deadline. The candidate who passes the knowledge exam, receives a certificate on the passed knowledge exam from the Slovenian Maritime Administration, which is issued with unlimited validity or is limited with regard to the validity of the health certificate.

A person who has the certificate of qualification for operating a VHF GMDSS station must be on a boat with radio station with digital selective call at very high frequencies (VHF GMDSS station).
The exam programme entails:
- rules on radio service,
- the basics of radiotelephony,
- work at the VHF GMDSS station or on the simulator.
The VHS GMDSS exam is composed of the theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is taken orally. The practical part encompasses the knowledge test on working with a VHF GMDSS station or on a simulator.
A candidate who wishes to take the VHF GMDSS exam must submit a written application at the Slovenian Maritime Administration stipulating the exam deadline. The certificate of qualification for operating a radio station is issued.
The candidate has the right to a complaint submitted in written form in 24 hours or on the next working day after the exam.
